The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is a great choice for an Android tablet this Holiday season and it is great to see a community of developers starting to develop for this device. As we’ve seen previously it is quite simple to root the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and it is now also possible to overclock it to up to 1.4 GHz thanks to a custom kernel released by _motley on XDA. Find out more after the break.

You need to root / jailbreak your tablet before you can flash a custom kernel to overclock your Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. Check out our instructions @ How To Root Your Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9.

Let’s have a look at what this custom kernel for the Galaxy Tab 8.9 provides:

-Based on Samsung open source kernel from opensource.samsung.com
-Overclock to 1.2Ghz or 1.4Ghz (a future version will likely be able to clock to 1.504Ghz)
-Default clock speed is stock.
-NOOP scheduler, please use interactive governor (default)
-Kernel features: vfp, vfp3, vfpv3d16, thumb, thumbee, swp, fastmult, edsp, half
-Built in cifs, tun, PS3, joystick, mouse support (cifs tested)
-NTFS and Xbox modules (not tested)
-Stock hardware/software is all working from my testing thus far (GPS, WiFi, sound, headphones, video, youtube etc.)

Note that this custom kernel requires your tablet to run a ROM based on the Galaxy Tab 8.9 Stock Android 3.1 with TouchWiz. It also requires ClockWork Mod (CWM) to be installed and you need SetCPU in order to overclock your Galaxy Tab 8.9.

You can download the custom kernel files and find the installation instructions on XDA @ [Kernel] Galaxy Tab 8.9 7310 Wifi OC 1.4Ghz.
