The Acer Iconia Tab A500 is a great Honeycomb tablet and it just got better with a ClockworkMod recovery port and its first custom ROMs. The Acer Iconia Tab A500 had been rooted for quite a while but this ClockworkMod port is the best thing that happened to it, now allowing developers to cook some custom ROMs and allowing us the end users to update our tablet whenever we feel like it. More details after the break.

If you just got an Acer Iconia Tab A500 and you want to install a custom ROM you will first need to root it. To do so follow our instructions @ Root Your Acer Iconia A500 Tablet – How To.

Now that your tablet is rooted you will want to install ClockworkMod recovery, you can download the files and find the instructions @ ClockworkMod Recovery 1.3.2.

Alright now it is time to install a custom ROM on your Acer Iconia Tab A500, there are 2 available at the time and we can be sure they will be more available in the future. You will find below the download links and instructions:

  • PRIMEE v1.4 port for Iconia A500 + recovery
  • Virtuous Picasso v. 1.0.1=- [Honeycomb 3.1][Kernel: Stock]

You may ask: why would I want to install a custom ROM on my tablet? First custom ROMs are usually lighter than the stock ROMs as much of the bloatware added by the manufacturer or carrier has been removed. Second you get the latest OS updates which means that you can upgrade your Acer Iconia Tab A500 to Android Honeycomb 3.1 right away without waiting for Acer to deliver an update. There are many more reasons to install a custom ROM on a device…

Here a couple of screenshots of the Virtuous Picasso Honeycomb 3.1 ROM for the Acer Iconia Tab A500:
