Google Maps provides free turn by turn navigation in the US but not everywhere across the world and some Chinese developers have been able to modify the Google Maps app to offer turn by turn navigation everywhere around the world. This is a fantastic news for those living outside the US as your Android phone can be a great alternative to a standalone GPS device.

stian230 @ XDA released this modified Google Maps app recently.

Installing this Google Maps version is quite simple [from XDA]:

1. Download the APK files @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007132
2. In Titanium Backup, select Maps and make a backup.
3. Select Maps and wipe data, then uninstall.
4. Select Street View and wipe data, then uninstall
5. Install Google Maps 5.2.1 ownhere-resign.apk
6. Go to market, and reinstall street view.

Now you can enjoy free turn by turn navigation using Google Maps all around the world.
