We have recently mentioned how to root the Google Nexus One or install custom ROMs on it but there is still one part we haven’t covered and it is how to unlock the (obviously locked) Google Nexus One bootloader. This is actually the first step towards doing anything you want on your device so it makes a lot of sense to cover it!
Note that I won't be responsible if you end up bricking your phone, unlocking or flashing your phone can be risky. If you follow the instructions then you will be fine!
The process is actually very simple as Google is a pretty flexible company so it only takes 4 steps to go through it:
- Download fastboot from here: http://www.romraid.com/paul/fastboot.zip
- Extract the content of fastboot.zip to a folder on your computer.
- Open up a command prompt window (run cmd.exe on Windows / open a new terminal session on Linux)
- Browse to the directory where you extracted fastboot and type:
'fastboot-windows oem unlock' or './fastboot-mac oem unlock' or './fastboot-linux oem unlock'
You’re done! Again we have to thank Paul from Android@MoDaCo for this hack.
Now that you’ve an unlocked bootloader you might find the following articles useful:
