If you have a custom Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM you might be running into issues connecting to the new Windows Mobile Marketplace.
Here is a very simple fix I found out while looking at different forums.
Using a registry editor like PHM Registry Editor go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Versions and change the Aku value to .5.3.00.
Most of the custom ROM modify this key, I had Longhorn on my end.
Soft-reset your device and you should now be able to access the Marketplace.
If you're connecting for the first time the application will automatically be updated. I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised by the Marketplace there are hundreds of applications available already and it is very simple to use!
Definitely worth a visit if you have a Windows Phone.
